BT Army Lists -- Marshal Laeroth's Way

As the title so eloquently puts it, this page is devoted to Black Templars army lists that I have battle tested for competitiveness.  With some exceptions, these are the lists I am currently using in games and tournaments.  Each entry will include the actual list and points values, as well as basic to advanced tactical explanations.  Unless otherwise noted, these lists will be built to 2k points.

The army lists will be ranked in order of their competitiveness.  The lists at the top are the most competitive, while the ones at the bottom are more casual in nature.  Generally speaking, I view mechanized gunline as the most competitive BT archetype in 5th Edition.  Then comes Drop Pod armies, and then mechanized close combat armies in third.  Good luck and enjoy!  :D

This list was originally developed for the hyper-competitive Nova Open tournament.  It's as optimized and efficient as I can make the list for that format.  Competitive.  The thought processes behind how I got to this point can be found in the "Prepping for Nova Open" blog series.  Part One; Part Two; Part Three; Part Four; "Improving" the Nova Open Gunline.

This list contains 4 TL-Lascannons, 14 Missile Launchers (8 Tank-Hunter), 2 Demolisher Cannons, 4 Meltaguns, and 3 Heavy Bolters.  It contains two units of Terminators, which will act as both bubblewrap and durable fire support.  The list has enough firepower to deal with every type of opponent, as well as the mobility to play the objective game if needed.

So what are you seeing? A fusion of proven effective units (MM Bunkers, Typhoons, dual-CML Terminators) with CC-oriented Terminators. What? How is that possible? Well, we all know how the Vanilla Space Marines are good with TH/SS terminators, especially when a Null Zone Librarian is taken with them. We won't have a Librarian, but we do have a Chaplain. I believe we can replicate many of the aspects that a Librarian brings to the Vanilla SM, so we're going to try it out.

First of all, you're probably wondering why I didn't take AAC as my vow. The thought was that because I had a Chaplain with my single CC unit, it wasn't needed due to Litanies of Hate. It is only effective on the turn of the charge, but that is just fine for me. Anyone that actually charges my unit of terminators is going to die a horrible death. LoH will take allow me to produce a "torrent of fire", which will emulate a Null Zone casting. Plus, let's be realistic. There are billions of armies out there with Psychic Hoods right now. I'd rather have the re-rolls. In addition, while we might not have a Hood ourselves, we do have our "Abhor" vow which will give us at least some protection against psykers.

But what else does the Chaplain and "Abhor" combo gain us? Well, against some armies, our vow will not come into play and that is just fine. Against those armies where Psykers are in play (quite a few), we have both protection and an extra consolidation move to start the game. This synergizes very well with the footslogging nature of the terminators by moving them closer to the enemy and can help you fix any errors you made during deployment phase. If and/or when your opponent starts shooting at those terminators, you'll likely lose one or two eventually. With the Chaplain, all is well. You'll never fail that Righteous Zeal test and what's more, you'll not have to worry about getting led around the board by bait units. RZ is actually a boon for this unit and the Chaplain's crusader seals/servitors will help you gain the maximum movement distance possible.

Adversely, you can use this unit as bubblewrap.   As a bubblewrap unit, you can protect our mid-field MM Bunkers from enemy assaults, which is their primary weakness. While I chose to go with 10 TH/SS in the squad, you can get away with adding in a few Lightning Claws in there if you want. The Chaplain will be able to cull a few wounds off of the enemy unit at I5 before everyone else strikes, just for giggles.

I opted to go for the MM/Mg combo for my MM Bunkers. There are four squads of them, so the redundancy is definitely there and I'll have firm control over the middle of the board. The Rhinos also have Searchlights for those Night Fighting missions we all hate. The rest of the army is pretty standard issue: three separate squadrons of a single Typhoon and two dual-CML Terminator squads with Tank-Hunters. These will be the primary LRAT in the army, at least until those MM get into range. Should be more than sufficient, especially if your enemy concentrates their fire on the Terminators or the MM Bunkers.

The list contains 14 Missile Launchers (8 Tank Hunters), 2 TL-Lascannons, 3 Heavy Bolters, 3 Meltaguns, and 2 Flamers.  Not bad shooting capabilities for a CC-oriented list eh?  ;)

Created as a result of this blog article.  Features a force that is fast, efficient, and durable due to the Power of the Machine Spirit upgrade on the vehicles.  The list has 6 TL-Lascannons, 6 Missile Launchers, 6 Meltaguns, 3 Autocannons, and 9 Heavy Bolters.  It should have plenty of AI and AT for every opponent type, as well as the mobility to excel in any scenario.  In addition, we have the capacity to put forth a slew of assault units that can have a significant impact on the battle if needed.  Its always nice to have contingency plans in case the shooting doesn't work.  Other than that, the list runs nearly exactly the same as my "Defensive" Drop Pod, but with long range firepower.  As such, the list should be considered competitive.

                                                    Total Points:  [2000]

This list is my favorite list to play.  Unfortunately, this BT archetype isn't in the top-tier of competitiveness.  Thus, it should be considered a casual, semi-competitive army list.  It is NOT a tournament list.  Lets talk about what the choices are, and why I took them.

For the HQ choices we have the Emperor's Champion.  The EC is taking the 'Accept Any Challenge, No Matter the Odds' vow and will be shacking up with the 9-man crusader squad in their rhino.  We've also taken a Marshal with a Lightning Claws, Storm Shield, and a Holy Orb of Antioch.  He's cheap and will go with the other small crusader squad to provide additional close combat support.  If the opportunity presents itself, he's also got Melta Bombs available.  The Marshal will also provide leadership 10 to all models while he lives though his special rule 'Rites of Battle'.

The elite slot is pretty simple.  Sword Brethren Assault Terminators with Furious Charge, riding in their Land Raider Crusader.  A beast of a squad, but quite expensive.  This is your main method of close combat destruction and your enemy will do everything they can to either avoid this squad or to destroy it.  Obscuring enemy shots by being behind cover, rhinos, or enemy units is key to getting the LRC where you need it to be.  Otherwise, target vulnerable squads and rush them.  Avoid bubblewrap units and try to assault multiple squads if at all possible to ensure you do not break from combat and just get shot up the next turn.  With 3 pairs of lightning claws and 2 thunder hammers, you'll be equipped to handle almost anything the enemy throws at you so don't be afraid to use these guys even on monstrous creatures if you need to.  Also do not be deceived by bait units that will just allow your opponent to kite our terminators around.

You have three crusader squads in the troops slot, numbering 10 bodies in each (with the ICs), all with their own rhino transports.  To save points, we take 2 neophytes per squad.  We also take the nigh required meltagun and power fist here.  The crusaders will be the backup close combat support for your army.  With the Accept vow, they do a pretty good job in this role.  Concentrate your forces and you shall be sure to win.  They are also your only scoring units, so do not become reckless with these squads!  You'll also have the EC and Marshal with the 9-man crusader squads to help out in CC.  Don't forget that you may also fire your meltaguns from inside the rhinos using the top-hatch fire point.  These guys are extremely important to your game.  Do NOT go charging balls out in the mid-field where they will just get shot up.

I've always been a fan of land speeders, so these are the natural choice for me.  Not only do they supply two Krak missile shots for excellent mobile anti-tank fire, but they are also armed with a Heavy Bolter and two frag missile shots which will blast through mobs with consummate ease should the opportunity arise.  Against more foot based armies, these are some of the few anti-infantry weapons you possess.  They are taken as separate units, as to avoid the negative aspects of the new squadron rules and to create targeting problems for your opponent.  Land speeders are excellent additions to any SM army and especially the BT, who are weak on the shooting side of things as it is.

Finally, the heavy support slot.  This section contains the majority of the firepower you'll be putting out in the form of Predator Destructors.  They have Autocannon turrets and Lascannon sponsons to give me excellent anti-tank firepower in the Heavy Support slot.  While not as good as the Las/Hbolter Predator in anti-infantry fire, it'll do decently well against MEQ armies and Monstrous Creatures.  In this configuration, I get decent anti-infantry fire, excellent monstrous creature killing power, and excellent AT fire for a very reasonable price.

To conclude, this list has all the properties needed to compete successfully at the 2000 point level.  There are a couple minor concerns with the list, which are not be too difficult to overcome.  The first is the semi-lack of anti-infantry fire.  As it currently stands, I have the hurricane bolters on the LRC, 3 heavy bolters, 6 frag missile launchers, and a slew of bolt pistols.  Because of this, Tyranids concern me.  My close combat abilities will offset this deficiency if I survive to get there.  Presently, I'm more concerned with popping transports and destroying enemy AT fire, particularly those with strong Alpha Strikes.  If I can't get people out of transports, this army will fail.  And obviously if I cannot destroy/stun my enemy's Alpha Strike, I will lose as well.

The second concern is the one terminator squad and it's Land Raider Crusader.  There are some experienced players that strongly believe that only one of these is asking for trouble, as a good opponent can destroy the LRC, refuse flank them, kite them around, or use bubble-wrap to minimize their effect on the game.  I normally agree.  Generally, a single LRC does not lend itself to competitive lists, but they CAN work.  Deployment is key and will likely have a lasting effect on the game.  It will also be a deciding factor on how long the LRC lives.  Try not charge inconsequential enemy units.  For 500 points, you cannot afford to use these guys on things better suited for your crusader squads.  Unless, of course, there is nothing better in charge range and there is no worry of enemy fire the next turn.  Even so, try to avoid using a thunder hammer to put butter on bread.

Here is how I built the Dual Land Raider Crusader list.  Its a pretty simple rock army build.  Because of this, it might face it's paper in a game and if that happens, expect to lose.  As such, the list isn't competitive but its very fun to play.  It could probably win some tournaments, but only if your opponent's don't bring your counter.

The EC takes the standard vow for close combat armies:  'Accept Any Challenge'.  The Terminator squads are armed with efficiency in mind.  3 pairs of lightning claws and 2 sets of thunder hammers/storm shields.  This allows the unit to put out massive amounts of hits at Initiative 5 on the charge, and should the target unit survive (very unlikely), you have the thunder hammers backing you up.  These also serve as insurance against units that are normally un-killable to normal space marines such as Dreadnoughts, Wraithlords, or C'tan.  With their Land Raider Crusader, you'll be well protected and should survive long enough to get most of the way to your opponent's line should that be your strategy.  Sometimes, however, a more reserved role for them is needed to protect your more fragile crusader squads while they capture objectives.  Of course, the situation at hand will determine the best tactic for these units.

The Crusader squads provide you with the second wave of close combat units.  These units will be used to clear/claim objectives, counter-assault, and provide you with a quick reaction force for your army.  These compliment the pure slaughter that are the Assault Terminators and provide backup should the need arise.  With your entire army focused on moving towards the enemy, you'll be able to protect these behind the LRCs.

Backing up the terminators and crusader squads, we have 3 land speeders with Heavy Bolters and Typhoon Missile Launchers.  These provide excellent duality for this army.  They are also one of the best options we have for AT firepower.  They have innumerable uses and fit in quite nicely with this army.

One of the cons of the list, is that there is only 3 troops squads.  That makes you extremely fragile, and may quickly be fighting for a draw if they get blown off the board.  You also have quite a few points locked up into the terminator squads (over 1000 points), so their placement is extremely important.  In addition, we have very limited long-range AT firepower.  These are provided by our Land Speeders, but don't expect them to live long.  So hope you blow up at least one transport before they go down, so that your army has something to charge when they get in range.
