A Crusade in 85 Days!

Hello out there!  A little bit a change of pace from my normal content; I thought I'd do something a little different and this is going to be a series dedicated to building and painting a Black Templars force pretty much from the ground up.  Since I am afflicted with slow painter syndrome and I always buy models before I finish painting everything, I am going to put a solid go at it.

Why, do you ask?  Well, I have a little marine on the way...so I have had to become very choosy where I spend my income and when/where I travel.  That means for this year, at least, I am forced to keep my tournaments within a three state radius.  That means that a local Grand Forks, ND tournament ran by the Warhogs is perfect for me.  No travel and I will be able to play against highly competitive players.  Thus, on July 20th, 2019, Slaughterhouse GT will feel the presence of the Black Templars once again.

So what are the rules of this series?  Well, considering my army has to fully painted (3-color minimums) and based to be eligible to play, those are the rules.  Haha.  So...in 85 days I need my 2000 point list to be completed.  I have a little bit of a head start, as I have some of my forces painted.  But not many, as I have traditionally played mechanized lists (which are painted) and that is not what I am bringing to SHGT.  And most tournaments that I play at have not required fully painted armies.  The only other stipulation I will most likely have is my self-enforced pure Black Templars list, due to the changes to ITC rules on who can win Best General with a specific faction.  Believe me, taking an Imperial Knight or some guardsmen would allow my list to be much more balanced and able to deal with differing threats.  So I am pretty sure I am going to go pure...but I might change my mind before tomorrow.  We'll see.  Haha.

I will post some pictures tomorrow of the forces that I currently have, as well as the list for painting.  Some of the units I will have in my list I do not yet own, so I will have to purchase those.  I am also waiting on my airbrush and compressor so that I can paint the vehicles that will be in my list.  I will post at least once a week on my progress, with notes on what I was able to accomplish each day.  This experiment is also somewhat of a motivational tool for me to ensure that I don't procrastinate like I tend to do and lose sight of my goal...SHGT!

I hope that this series will be enjoyable for you, especially for those that a looking for a change of pace.  I still have a couple articles that I have planned that are tactica related, so fear not.  We're starting to get into our tournament cycle and lots of stuff to review!

Have a great night all!

Awesome!

I recently dropped a Castellan from my list for the same reason. I am however running an assassin (Cullexus), which I have heard does not violate the "pure faction" rules of the ITC.

I won't lie, I am wavering slightly. Haha. The presence of a IK immensely helps deal with other knights out there, which is heavy in my regional meta. Otherwise, I will have to pretty much ignore them since you really need to dedicate 400+ points to being able to kill a IK. But...I also don't want to get lumped into the "Imperium" faction. Assassins are okay for maintaining Adeptus Astartes factions if they are being summoned via their strategem.

Yup, I'm summoning the assassin via strat.

Sicaran Venators PUNISH Knights from what I've read.

A lot of the people who defeated me did so by ignoring the Castellan.

I played pure BT for several months competitively before finally giving in and getting the Castellan. It improved my performance by at least 50%. Now that the factions are back to being pure though I kinda would just rather scrap for points in my faction even though I don't know how competitive I can be without dropping Castellan levels of cash on Forge World.

What I've been playing and what I think will work is gun line Templars and what I really want to do do is Black Templar assault force.

I'm looking forward to seeing you break down your army list and why you take certain units. Just a question, is razorback spam still good or is that an outdated way of playing?

List analysis incoming! As for your question, without the use of Guilliman, Razorbacks eat too many points to be effective in large numbers. You will have to build around them with HQ bubbles to make sure they get their rerolls. Not impossible to do, but as I said, you are not as effective at it as Ultramarines. However, those Ultra's cannot pull off min-maxed Crusader squads to go with those Razorbacks. So with the right list, yes, they can be effective.

The game has shifted significantly towards A) Horde infantry, B) tons of min-maxed infantry, or C) Elite/Buffed units (i.e. Imperial Knights).

Thanks for your detailed reply Marshal Laeroth!

I see, reason I ask is because I bought 6 razorbacks with assault cannons. Was just wondering if they were competitive. Good to know my investment was not a total loss. I look forward to your list analysis!

Hurrah- cheers for another fellow Templar expecting a neophyte!

I'm excited to see this chapter of the blog. I'm finally getting close to finishing up my army and most of my local friends in the hobby are wrapped up in tourney organisation and play here in MB, so I'm very interested in how a pure Templar list will fare in ITC.

Thanks! I am super excited to get her suited up in her first set of carapace armor. ;)

Aye, its been something of an ongoing issue for myself. I bought stuff, but never kept up on the painting. I started out with some terminators and I am actually pretty happy with how they turned out. I should be able to get pictures up of them shortly. :D

As for the gaming, I hope that I can do the chapter proud. If I can place highly at pretty decently sized GT, that will show others that the BT are worthwhile to be used and aren't bottom-tier.

Well!
I was really worried, I thought you surrended and parked the BT.
I'm really interested in playing Black Templars, I know it will never be so effective like UM, but still I want to defend our Chapter's Honor.

Really glad to see you here again.

Congrats for your incoming neophyte, good news.

I will never park my Black Templars. I am stubborn and I am always looking for ways to win with them. They are my main army, and always will be, though I admit to have dabbled with various other armies over the past 20 years. So no worries there. I just might be overly busy at that particular time, so not able to post any updates. I am trying to be better about it. :D
