Bob,

I lost your email, so I'll have to post this way. A friend of mine sent me a Black Templars themed record! I don't have a record player, so I can't listen to it yet, but I thought it might bring a smile to your face.

What are you doing for white? A single coat of skull white will not work - and this is a colour that will make or break your stress or ease with painting Templars.

Good mixes and tested applications are the difference between days and months of time, along with wasted money spent on models - or frustration. When the sets of painting work well they are timely, productive, and you profit from this.

Not to say unprofitable actions are "bad", theres no such thing, I actually intend to fail as much as possible when I come up with a new painting scheme. Thats right the objective is to fail - this shows the paths and options, otherwise its just shooting in the dark as you go along.

Too thick and you screw up the detail, too thin and you have to do multiple coats - a waste of time and unnecessary repetitions.

Your looking for a single set, a single coat, the mix has to be good.

Let me know what you have in mind. If your going to be returning to this kind of hobby video - make a category and stick this in there along with the other advice bits given - this was things are preserved and not lost in the templar vaults!

What I currently do is paint very thinned down Astronomican Grey over the black areas where the white will eventually go. Sometimes, if I'm feeling up do it, I'll do the same for anything that will also be Bleached Bone. I do about a 4:1 water:paint ratio and that seems to work well for me. The paint is very fluid, so there is no brush strokes, but also thick enough that there is still excellent coverage.

Once that is dry, I simply paint a thinned down coat of white onto the foundation paint. If that isn't sufficient coverage (which it usually is), I'll do one more. However, I'm hesitant of doing that, because too much paint starts to make things blotchy.

Besides the actual "finished" things in the video, most painted things are only 1/3 to 1/2 completed, even though they technically qualified for the 3 color minimum that Nova Open placed on us. Most noticeable is the Typhoons. They need a lot of work yet. I didn't even have time to paint the white on the shoulder pads. lol!

Hey ML

Looking good, I'd get the base colours sorted on those vindicators as soon as you get 'em, that way you'll just (just!) be left with the detailing and a couple of marines.

By the way, how do you get the dusty look you mentioned? I've not done any of mine yet but that's the plan. In the IA - Model Masterclass they use graveyard earth heavily thinned, but that requires an airbrush!

Keep up the good work, looking forward to watching the progress...

The dusty look comes from spraying the models with Citadel Purity Seal. I use it because I use cheap paints. It's as though it is a little grainy and almost visible, so it makes them look dusty (it also helps protect the paint-job, which is what it's for).

As I recommended, this needs a how-to + style section as it is no worthwhile for people who want to learn from us to have to dig through information. A kind of black templar hobby clinic - experiment + exploration centre.

Some simple tips from Danny Brown who runs a successful on line community are:
1. Post less. (Ask questions of things he writes about.
2. Be honest. Drop vacuous respect.
3. Be less closed. True engagement allows the discussion to expand.

Its not all about you. Write, comment, about others. Add value to their lives.

Focus on other bloggers. = Builds a community.
My experience so far of some wh40k community websites is this (Listen to me or shut up - or no more posting your stuff because I want the attention even though my work is not that good- how much does it cost to advertise.. err.. look I'll make it 1000 dollars a month..made up in the last few minutes.. and add a few holiday pictures to my website.. also int he last few minutes.. and i get 7 million view- BULLSHIT

It is also quite depressing to write things, to have them forgotten or left in the trash (- or somebody else comes along and claims credit or belittles other peoples work and emphasises their own. This is community work, and not solely work of one but many.

This is a societal problem though, people who dont what their doing and CANT see whats happening are often making decisions and taking credit when their not on the frontline.

Partly why I am contributing so much to having Nikes method presented - thats the kind of thing you dont want people to forget - because the work is great - thats evolution, it doesnt deserve to sit in the trash.

Imperial armour uses (if not over uses) graveyard earth throughout the book. Its a great colour. Its one of those that will always help. Mixing it with thinner - alcohol or tamiya will do.
If you dont have an airbrush consider a spray. this needs experimentation but with a bit of tweaking! Yup - a normal spray bottle - i.e. $4
http://www.hsconline.co.uk/100ml-spray-bottle

Purity seal is 50% gloss and 50% matt. It will also bind layers together, i.e. powder - so they dont rub off. It also adds an evenness and balance to different tones because of the texture and shine.

Masterclass tip: You can use purity seal to seal in decals and most importanly remove silvering. Silvering implies weakness and lack of durability, eliminate it with Satin purity seal.

Decals are supposed to go (carcharodon you can benefit here because the carcharodons can achieve alot with that decal sheet)

1. Before any decals > spray Satin. This gives you a foundation.
2. Apply Decal. Dont put it in a tub of water. This makes it too weak. Just wet it slightly. Use a cotton bud or better a good brush.
3. Put it on, move it about, let it dry.
4. Put a little gloss over it. Use the GW one. This makes it permanent and water proof.
5. You now have a shiny decal. Let it dry.. then spray satin. Now the gloss is gone and the decal has 2 protective layers.

That was one fifth of the Masterclass tanks event last February run by Phil and Mark - Forgeworld painters, writers and designers.

Its amazing how much the decals can add - you can even add micro - sol and set http://www.wonderlandmodels.com/brands/microscale/

This makes decals even softer. So for example lets say you have an irregular and jagged surface - you can add sol/set and the decal will bend to meet the shape. Good for thing like Ork faces on weird shapes and strange places.

Enjoy.

I agree 100%. One of the reasons why I'm doing some shifting around of my website, to pull out the Painting/Hobby Section. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to store the information that is being generated here (and elsewhere), so I'm open to suggestions on that front. I'm not sure how I'm going to generate discussions here on IN without having a specific blog in that section, but I'd rather not do that. I'd like to keep to one blog, as its difficult enough with just the one sometimes. But I suppose I could have a page with links to good painting/hobby articles (and their discussions) as a way of "storing" those blog posts as they happen. For the rest, I'm not really sure how go ahead.

I'm not an expert painter, so I don't feel comfortable making a video tutorials (i.e. painting live)...but I am certainly okay with taking pictures and explaining the process I took. And I'll likely do so soon (after I finish my army). I've found that a great many players are using very similar schemes as I am nowadays and so some pointers for newer players, even if I'm not an expert, will help these players grow their skill set. :)

I was going to open another blog, but realized its too much to be looking at. Keep with one blog, deffo. Back to the point:

Essentially this is about how do you get people to engage with the clinic and become community members, rather than just followers?
This is a casual past time, but has real impact on peoples lives.

With going ahead with storing hobby articles on weebly - one thing to consider is you can call the post a different name - giving it a unique category.

Otherwise you can dedicate a page - and have the drag drop box - 1 picture - 1 head line - Laeroths completed army (links)
Second box - Tips from Lucion (links)
Third box - (someone else) (links)

Therefore each area gets stored with integrative respects.

If you trust us you can also give certain people access to update that area themselves (adding pictures, etc) I am not sure if you saw the cloud based presentation software prezi, but I am making a dedicated BT news thread. This will be particularly fun for on goings with vassal.

Ive just been busy - My wife is Pregnant, things have been a little hectic, rushy, thankfully things are calm and very thankfully I can get a job out here in Colombia.

Lastly if your over whelmed with emails send some over, let us help solve it too.

First and foremost: Congratulations to the both of you! If your online persona is any indication, you'll have a very happy child on your hands. :D

"Lastly if your over whelmed with emails send some over, let us help solve it too."

That is actually an excellent idea. I could very easily make emails anonymous and then post them on the blog for comments and assistance. I still could add my own thoughts, but then it'd actually help my load significantly. It'd only really work though if people are willing to help out with it.

I'm willing to open up parts of the website so people can edit their "pages" here on Implausible Nature, if someone decides to do so. However, I would ask that these pages stay fluff or hobby/painting-oriented. Just let me know if any of ya'll want something like that and I'll set it up. :)

Thanks Laeroth!

If you open up the part, I'll do what I can to piece together things and put them in for BT art+fluff. Its about helping you with the burden.I am going to start new work next week, so I'll have less time, thus a system is essential.

I am not sure how many emails you receive, but it would be helpful that we have a method to apply in answering it.
one that includes a vision and a goal. Sharing some of your wisdom and how to on that is needed!

Some helpful concepts that need discussion.
Mission, Team, Leadership.

What is the goal of answering emails? What is the mission? (Building better lists to lead a more successfully and motivated life, spend less money - get more out of your list)
Who else is going to help? Not in it for personal gain - or glamour, in it for the whole.
Leadership - These poor souls who takes on the yoke is now responsible for the outcome though most of the work will be on the followers.

I'd like to consider the context this is all in too. A Black Templar website callled Implausible nature. What does that connote?

Implausible as a word has adjectives like being incredible, unbelievable , and also
unlikely and improbable. How does this relate to people to
write?

Nature, can mean things like characteristics, qualities and traits, and among other things it can also refer to a disposition or how something is recognised.

What I am trying to do is think of the name of the site, in relation to what occurs, the processés within it - human and digital resources- and how it can be optimized (like an army list) to provide maximum effectiveness.

An army list is essentially, as Nike put it, winning is largely based on numbers. Essentially, with search rankings, traffic numbers and tools to compare websites youve got a solid analogy between optimizing websites and optimizing army lists.

It is just the terminology that is different.

But we dont optimize websites to destroy an army, we do it to build a community, so the conditions and gauging of success are different.

To support motivation - user emails could be expressed is with a call to action. I.e. (Ok Guys, this guy needs help with A.B.C)

In other words - we are lifting the burden and sharing the mail in a way which is task orientated and can be resolved.
