Chapter Approved 2018 and Vigilus Defiant

Well, its that time of the year Brothers and Sisters!  And what a great time of year it is!  The Emperor has seen our efforts across the galaxy this past year and focused his thoughts in our direction.  In the first time in quite a while, we get Black Templars rules!  Feast your eyes on some of the goodies coming out of Vigilus Defiant and the new Chapter Approved 2018 book.
Vigilus Defiant

Sword Brethren Detachment:
It affects High Marshal Helbrecht, The Emperor's Champion, Captains, Company Champion, and Company Veterans for 1 CP.

A new Warlord Trait -- Master swordsman -- Gives your Warlord +1 attack and every unmodified roll to hit of 6 becomes 2 hits instead.

A new BT specific Relic -- The Holy Orb of Antioch --  6" range.  For every 10 models in the unit, roll a D6.  On a 2+ they suffer D3 mortal wounds.

Stratagems:

Uphold the Honor of the Emperor (1CP) -- Gives a select Sword Brethren unit in this detachment a 5+ FNP roll in the fight phase.

Suffer not the Unclean to Live (2CP) -- Give a select Sword Brethren unit +1 attack and re-roll to wounds.

Indomitus Crusader Detachment:

1 CP: Liberators
Use this Strategem at the start of the Fight phase. Pick an INDOMITUS CRUSADER unit from your army. Until the start of your next turn, each time you roll an unmodified hit roll of 6 for an attack made by a model in this unit, that attack inflicts 2 hits on the target instead of 1.

1 CP: Veteran Intercessors
Use this Strategem before the battle begins. Pick an INDOMITUS CRUSADER INTERCESSOR SQUAD from your army to be Veteran Intercessors. That unit gains the VETERAN keyword for the duration of the battle. In addition, add 1 to the Attacks and Leadership characteristics of that unit for the duration of the battle.

1 CP: Target Sighted

Use this Strategem at the start of your Shooting phase. Pick a VETERAN INTERCESSORS unit from your army. Until the end of the phase, stalker bolt rifles that models in that unit are armed with gain the following ability "Their weapons can target a CHARACTER even if it is not the closest enemy unit. If you roll a wound roll of 6+ for their weapons, it inflicts a mortal wound in addition to its normal damage"

1 CP: Bolt Storm
Use this Strategem at the start of your Shooting Phase. Pick a VETERAN INTERCESSORS unit from your army. Until the end of the phase, [auto?] bolt rifles that models in that unit are armed with gain the following ability "When this weapon targets an enemy unit within half range, it automatically hits its target"

Chapter Approved 2018

Stormshield: 2pts per non Character, 10 for chars.
Relic blade: 9 pts now.
Bikes: go down to 21pts.
Dread: 60pts, ven 80pts.
Dread ccw 33pts.
Grimaldus 120 to 90
Helbrecht 170 to 150
Landspeeder: 70 pts to 50pts
Typhoon launcher: Down to 38pts
Razorback: 87 to 70pts
Twin-Linked Lascannon: 50 to 40pts.
Terminators: 40pts to 23 pts
Land Raider Crusader: 244pts to 200

Combi melta 19 to 15
Combi Plasma 15 to 11
Melta gun 17 to 14
Plasma gun 13 to 10
Flamer 9 to 6
Power fist 12 to 9

So, as you can see, there is a mixture of new rules for the BT and overall point drops.  Definitely thrusts new strategies square into the fore-front of army building.  New lists for the first time a long time and I am thrilled to start digging deeply into these new rules!  Over the coarse of the next couple days, I'll dig deeper into what these rules potentially mean to us and how we can use them on the board.  :D

Hey, it seems BT are getting some attention...that's good start right? Guessing you will re-evaluate the army list based on the cost drop and the new options for our chars and sword brethren? Can't wait to read the new list, the current one posted was perfect!

Keep up the good work!!

I like it. I haven't figured out what I can do with it yet, but I like it. Never entertained the thought of taking Company Champion or Company Veterans. I've been building for Vanguard Veterans with Storm Shields.

So, I'll just start this by saying R.I.P. Crusader Squads......

Other than that the detachment rules seem ok at best. You'll be stressed to yield the command points to make use out of any of it.

Plus, none of this solves the problem of delivery, all those fancy assault rules are useless when any shooting army in the game can spend 2-3 command points and delete any uniy the Marine book can field in one shooting turn.....

Lately I have Vanguard Vets. with Jump Packs,, Neophyte (scout) Squads and Speeders out flanking, taking objectives and assaulting the enemy in the back field. I also have a "castle" of Ven. Dreads., Hellblasters and Aggressors with all of my face-beaters (Helbrecht, Grimaldus, and Emperor's Champion) so that when the inevitable enemy rush gets there (Tyranids, TZangors, Orks, assorted chaos blobs...) the enemy has put themselves right where I want them to be. (b/c none of my badass characters have jump packs and I will not field Rhinos/Razorbacks anymore - "touch a tank" is not cool).

(Land Raider Crusader, aka "Supreme Assault Delivery System", awww you got touched 'cause you delivered an assault force and now you can't shoot all those awesome guns,)

What these rules do is give me some badass melee troops to stand against that tide with all of my awesome characters when the enemy rush gets there, and I like that, wish they could take jump packs but I still like it.

Crusader Squads... yup... <sad face>

Also I've been running a double battalion of Black Templars so having command points to spend has not been an issue for me. (13CP)

Yeah that doesn't work when your main opponents are necrons / death gaurd / tau / eldar lol

My initial thoughts are taking tons of two weapons: chainswords and thunder hammers.
Chainswords maximize the hits and wounds we get from the Stratagem, while hammers get the best damage output with more attacks and the free rerolls. Even just 3 Thunder Hammers in a Company Vets unit would wipe a Daemon Prince easy. Even using this Stratagem on a Smash Captain with the new Warlord Trait gives you 6 attacks with exploding dice and rerolls to wound, which hits hard enough to cripple something like a Knight, or even just destroy a vehicle or monster. Combine it with Honor the Chapter if you want to wipe something big like Magnus.

But I think we have to look at mechanizing if you want to make sure those Vets get to charge something. Even with new Storm Shield prices, they die far too quickly to even basic bolter fire.

My last thought is not to discount the 5+ FNP Stratagem, for one CP you could save a character or squad from potentially getting aced by an interrupt attack, or just if your opponent's DP/Smash Captain got the jump on you.
