Come on! Don't do that to me. :(

So I was browsing my YouTube subscriptions this evening and I came across some videos that stood out to me, as they were Black Templars related.  They were made by Fritz40k (he also put out a .PDF to accompany the videos) and basically had the goal of teaching new players how to use the Black Templars.  Sound familiar?  Thought so.  Its basically a viral BT 101 guide.  I'm all for helping people in the BT community and anyone that does so is alright in my book.

But, I'm disappointed in the content given.  He's done good tacticas in the past, but when you base your advice on a list that is fundamentally uncompetitive, there is issues.  While I've been planning on making several video guides myself for some time, Fritz beat me to the punch.  Unfortunately, he has the subscriber/follower base that will take his word as 'The Truth'.  This is bad.

I plan on doing a thorough review on both the PDF file and the videos here on Implausible Nature.  There are problems in his advice and quite a bit I don't agree with.  On the other hand, there are nuggets of useful information there that should be addressed.  In the meantime, you can check out the videos (about 1-1.5 hrs worth) and PDF yourself.  Hopefully you'll see what is wrong in them.  If not, I'll enlighten you all soon enough.

I'm sorry your idea got scooped. That's no fun.

I do have to say that there's far more critical thinking in 40K than we're lead to believe. Just because the internet says something is awesome (or awful) doesn't mean that it's true.

I THINK I know who Fritz is, but I haven't read his blog and am not a fanboi (well, mostly cause I'm a girl). If I were to have come across his videos somehow, I would have checked them out and compared them to yoru advice, along with that of Nikephoros over at Bringer of Victory, Weinas at Indy40K, and a couple personal real life friends. I would have then tossed out anything that doesn't jibe with my personal playstyle or anything that just sounds stupid.

So, help a somewhat Youtube challenged girl out... how do you find 40K related material/tutorials?

Haha. I don't mind the fact that he did it at all, since I really didn't ever mention it. Someone was bound to eventually if it wasn't me.

My issue is that the advice in the videos are purposefully ignoring items in the 5th Edition rules that every army has to keep in mind during list building (i.e. only troops can claim objectives, tenets of firepower, infantry based AT, etc). I'll talk about them soon. He strongly implies that the list he designed to be the most effective in the current gaming environment (5th Edition), is one of the best ways to do it. But it has so many fundamental flaws in the list, that it can only be considered a casual or fun list. Which is perfectly fine...if you let your viewers know that. :D

As I mentioned, there IS some good stuff in there. Not everything is bad, so I will definitely credit him where it is due. I like good advice and when I see it, I promote it. But you are definitely correct. A person needs to take a look at things themselves to decide what is good or not. Unfortunately, internet celebrities such as Fritz have huge numbers of followers who just automatically think that their advice is correct. It is compounded by the fact that all of those followers think the same thing, so *he* (insert internet celeb here) must be right because everyone else says so too...right? ;)

Maybe I should create an alternate personality of myself so I can take over the internet. That would be fun. :D

ML,

I read the PDF yesterday and I wasn't impressed either. I'm going to watch a few of the Youtube vids now and let you know what I think.

Going through the videos, I noticed he was trying to give the Marshal three weapons (Storm Bolter, Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon). Oops.

He also made an error in "Seize Ground" where you place the five objectives *before* you decide deployment type and zones.

Meh, he says you should take crusader seals but then says he can't because of points, but it's okay, he is naturally lucky with dice.

Yeah, I was shaking my head when I was watching those videos. The Marshal's gear slip up was a big one that I noticed right away. And the funny thing is he goes into a big 'ole speal about why he needs them. That was just one thing.

Like I said, I'm going to do a review on them. Probably tomorrow since my plans canceled out...leaving me alone on Christmas. :( Oh well.
