Footslogger List

Hello all!  I hope your battles are going well!  Today I'm going to post up something I haven't done in an extremely long time.  Here is a fun list that I've been playing with, to reasonable success, the last week or so.  It amuses me greatly.  Why?  Because like those foot lists with a billion models/wounds, I am also putting a ton of bodies and wounds on the board.  It makes it incredibly difficult for your opponent to deal with, though there are certainly hard counters to the list that will decimate you.  Nevertheless, the list is fun.
~ Battalion Detachment ~

HQ:
* Captain w/ Power Axe, Storm Shield, and The Crusader's Helm.  [94]
* Chaplain Grimaldus. [120]

Elites:
* Reiver Squad (1x Sergeant and 9x Reivers) w/ Combat Knives and Grav Chutes.  [200]
* Reiver Squad (1x Sergeant and 9x Reivers) w/ Combat Knives and Grav Chutes.  [200]
* Venerable Dreadnought w/ 2 Twin Autocannons.  [156]

Troops:
* Crusader Squad (1x Sword Brother, 9x Initiates, 10x Neophytes) w/ 1 Power Axe, 1 Power Sword, 18 CCWs.  [249]
* Crusader Squad (1x Sword Brother, 9x Initiates, 10x Neophytes) w/ 1 Power Axe, 1 Power Sword, 18 CCWs.  [249]
* Intercessor Squad (1x Sergeant and 4x Intercessors) w/ Bolt Rifles.  [100]

* Intercessor Squad (1x Sergeant and 4x Intercessors) w/ Bolt Rifles.  [100]
* Intercessor Squad (1x Sergeant and 4x Intercessors) w/ Bolt Rifles.  [100]

Heavy Support:
* Hellblaster Squad (1x Sergeant and 4x Hellblaster) w/ Plasma Incinerators.  [165]
* Hellblaster Squad (1x Sergeant and 4x Hellblaster) w/ Plasma Incinerators.  [165]

Total Points:  [1998]

So what do we see?  Most importantly, we have 90 marines and 1 dreadnought on the board.  That is an immense amount of bodies.  It works out to be 140 wounds, plus an additional 8 wounds from our Ven Dread and 9 from our HQs.  This makes it incredibly hard for your opponent to deal with and they will be hard pressed to destroy all of your models.  We have deep striking disruption with the Reivers, long-range firepower from the Ven Dreadnought and Hellblasters, mid-range objective holding with the Intercessors, and aggressive advancement with our Crusader squads.  While the list doesn't have a super large amount of fire support, it is often enough due to the disruptive capabilities of the Reivers.  Add in the "Wisdom of the Ancients" stratagem and you have some pretty reliable shooting.  Two full squads of them is nothing to sniff at, especially when you consider combat squad and our chapter tactics.  Is the list competitive?  50/50.  But it is incredibly satisfying to play nonetheless.

It's nice to see a fluffy Templar army show some promise. You mentioned the Reivers and their disruption tactics were able to make up for your lack of fire support. My army lacks a lot of long range fire support and I personally prefer infantry and transport heavy lists. Do you think Reivers are sufficient to build effective (if not top-tier competitive) Templar assault lists? And can you go into detail on how exactly you utilized the Reivers? If you can't answer that here then it may be a good idea for future articles and Black Templars 101.

Here is an alternative footslogging list that I devised with additional fire support...I feel it is probably an upgrade to the original list simply due to the increased long range firepower provided. However, you do lose a good amount of wounds (114 total), a few less bodies (84 total), and 2 CP's less. You gain another 2 Ven Dreadnoughts, which gives you another 24 wounds and 5 wounds from Grimaldus.

To answer your question, no. I do not think that Reivers are sufficient to compensate completely for lack of long range firepower. They are excellent distractions, which buys you time...but if you fail those initial charges, the entire game falls apart for you. You cannot get around having fire support, but deep strike units help. Reivers fulfill that role extremely well for the Black Templars. But as you mentioned, I will writing more about the Reivers.

How can you get two twin-autocannons on the dreadnoughts? I'm reading in the codex that you can replace the dreadnought CC weapon only with missile launcher

The double Autocannon is in the Index, and in a FAQ GW announced that you could use either the setup in the C:SM or in the Index.
