Possible "Hobby Thursdays" and Painting Project?

To start off, I just spent an hour typing up my blog post for this evening, only for it to get eaten by the Weebly Monster.  Sad face.  So this re-write is going to be much more condensed.  Maybe this will teach me to use the "Save to Drafts" button that is chillin' there?  Heh.

Anyway, I've decided that I need a motivational tool to paint my miniatures.  Not only mine, but the stack of minis that my friends wish me to paint.  One of these years, I'll get around to those Blood Drinkers for Brandon.  I really want to finish painting at least ONE of my armies for the Black Templars.  Its like a splinter in my mind that I cannot get rid of.

Here I sit, giving out all kinds of competitive advice for BT players and I don't even have a painted army.  How does that make me feel?  Pretty damn bad.  Most of my readers do have well painted armies, so I'm getting showed up pretty good.  I intend to correct that flaw.  While doing so, I'll provide myself a consistent source of blog posts.  I cannot be entirely sure what they'll entail, but something is almost always better than nothing.

As I touched on, my painting goals will be centered around my Black Templars for the time being.  Why?  Because I've not seen any new release schedules for the Dark Eldar, causing potential problems with my painting progress if I were to take them to Nova Open.  Thus, I'll just stick with the Black Templars at the Nova.  Previously, I wanted to bring in the new DE and rape some face, but the last month or so the BT have been getting knocked left and right by competitive players.  Because of this, I feel that I need to represent the community in some capacity and bring them to the "Big Show".  Even if I don't win, I intend to make my mark.  If I do win, all hell would break loose around in the 40k community.  Not a bad thing, in my opinion.  ;)

There is a problem, however.  The Nova Open requires that each army be painted.  I have very little painted.  So, I have to prioritize my painting schedule.  Because I intend to bring my Gunline army to Nova, most of my painting will be vehicle based.  This could be a curse or a boon.  Because there are only 26 infantry models in the army, my paint time could potentially be significantly shorter.  I'm not sure, since I've never painted a vehicle fully before.  :D

To assist me in this quest, I am strongly considering doing my own version of this painting project.  Of course, because I actually work, 21 days isn't realistic for me.  I was thinking more along the lines of 61 days.  This would give me two full months to devote to the project and that should be sufficient time to get everything done.  Not too much time, considering my motivational factor so it'll still be a challenge, but not too little time either.

Considering I finally got my BT vehicle upgrade bits in the mail, I can finally build my last two Razorbacks and I'll build my last Land Speeder while I'm at it.  Once that is done, I'll buy another Dreadnought because I only have two plastic ones (my other two are metal and weapons aren't interchangeable).  That will give me this list to paint up:
  • 1 Emperor's Champion
  • 3 Dreadnoughts
  • 20 Initiates (4x Lascannons, 4x Plasmaguns, 12x Bolters)
  • 5 Inquisitorial Storm Troops (actually Cadian Kasrkin Troopers; 2x Meltaguns, 3x "Hellguns")
  • 4 Razorbacks
  • 1 Rhino
  • 3 Land Speeders
  • 3 Predators
Quite the ambitious goal, but I think I can manage it in 61 days.  Then I'll have a completely built and painted army, so I can devote more time to my Dark Eldar or painting up my CC-oriented BT dudes.  The sky is the limit!  :D

That's a pretty realistic timetable. Even just a couple minutes a day makes a difference! Go for it!

I'll join you for motivational purposes if you want either in the comments or BT forum on B&C.

Needed:
1x EC
1x 5/1 Crusader, BP/CCW, Melta
2x 5/2 Crusader, BP/CCW, Melta, BP/PF
2x DN MM/HF, EA
5x Drop pods w/ DWML

Progress:
EC: Parts selected for conversion and set aside. "Counts As" (CA) EC assembled and basic paint done (black with white shoulders and some light metal coloring applied to weapons and details). NOTE: The CA EC will be wielding the "Black Chainsword" and the coverted EC will have the "Black Ax"...

Troops: All Neos assembled, All Initiates bodies and legs assembled and on base. Rest of the bits ready to go.

Elites: 1x DN assembled and base painted. 1x DN is complete on the sprue and waiting in the box.

Transport: Nothing on the pods yet, awaiting assembly.

Excess, trial, experiments:
1x Rhino almost finished, awaiting some magnets so it can be several different variations.
1x Rhino unassembled.
4x Term/1x Term Sgt: basic paint
7x Bolter Marines: basic paint
1x Flamer Marine: basic paint
1x Rocket Launcher Marine: basic paint.

Plan to at least put the heads on the Crusader initiates today.

Hell, I'll take motivational assistance. I'm hoping to get this all started on the 1st, just to make it nice and easy. I think I'll keep it to this blog, since B&C gets enough traffic where one "WIP" thread isn't so exciting. Here, it gives a more personalized feel to the place.

The more I think about it though, the more I believe it will be fairly easy to complete this project if I stay on task. Looking over my vehicles, they seem like it'll take very little effort to get them at least battle standard ready. I want to weather them a bit, but it isn't necessary. Just need to get them painted first.

But knowing me, easy isn't so easy. I just need to get started, then I'll get into a routine and all will be well. But the starting part is what usually gets me. :D

Heh, for me it is trying to relearn skills I gave up over 30 years ago (making models go together straight and right) and over 25 years ago (painting small gaming figures). I enjoyed both, but gaming was even more fun.

So now, to indulge my gaming hobby, I have to invoke lesser ones. I actually wouldn't bother probably except I have a 20-something punk kid and a guy my age who would be absolutely shocked to see me put out a decently painted army.

I'm assuming you mean weathering by paint? I've been looking at the Rhino body I built first to get used to trimming and gluing again. A little judicious work with a file and maybe a few "patches" from scrap plastic could add a little flavor to it.

This time I'm going to try leaving some of the shoulder pads and all of the backpacks off. I painted them fine attached, but they need a little black touchup. I'm going to see which way is quicker.

Progress, it was scattered showers today, so all of the BP armed Initiates (12) are now completed except for some pads and the backpacks. The melta ones look a bit trickier to line up, so I'm going to get the rest of the body painted then come back for the arms, gun and head.

I can't say I have that kind of experience backing me up, but I am definitely one of the BT old vets (playing them 10 years). ;)

It seems that you have some external motivational influences yourself. Glad to hear. Perhaps it'll keep you going, and therefore, me in forward motion. For sanity, I need to finish this army.

You were correct. I meant weathering via paint. I've done it before on infantry, so I cannot imagine it'll be much different on a vehicle. Since it is essentially the last step (and an extra one at that), it can be skipped if I'm running out of time on my painting project. Though, I think it'll look very nice if I get it down right.

I think that it is definitely easier to paint the minis without the shoulder pads, guns, and arms. Just have to make sure to remember which gun matches which army. :D I prefer to put the backpack on before painting, but there isn't a specific reason outside of minimizing the loose pieces around my desk.

It's actually a lack of current experience and some of the goofs I've made so far....

I'm finding that the guns/arms/pads thing is rather variable. I've got 12 BP/CCW Initiates primed on my table in various stages of "undress". Depending on the pose, I've got 2 with both pads on, 9 with one pad on (8 w/ left, 1 w/ right) and one with no pads at all. I based it all on the trouble it would take me to put a 10/0 or 18/0 brush into the slot to do some detail work.

The melta Initiates are just base, legs and torso with a coat of black priming over the chest to groin area. I need to touch up a couple of details then I'll put head, arms and melta on one to see how it goes.

Backpacks, meh, I'm not sure. The first set of bolter marines from AoBR were a bit of pain, having to go to smaller brushes to get under the pack and still have some "dings" to be touched up. Looking at them, if I get a base coat on them, I can lay them flat and do most all of the details then glue them on.

I'm using the Tamiya Extra Thin cement with the brush which I'm real happy with.

Loose pieces, I'm lucky. I have a number of 18 slot pill boxes that easily hold an entire figure in pieces and an arseload of the little liquid medicine cups that I can pop stray bits into.

Yeah, I really need to get myself a better bits box. The one I have right now has 5 deep and wide slots. Which is generally ok, but if I wanted to separate bits out for projects or whatever, I cannot do so. Its especially annoying to me now because I have a bunch of Dark Eldar/vehicle bits on sprues that I'd like to put in my box, but I don't want to mix SM stuff with DE ones. :D
