I've wanted to play the Sisters of Battle for as long as I can remember. Primarily because I was afraid of painting them and messing it up. Like I would defile my model's honor or something. In 5th/6th Edition, we either couldn't take allies or they were not allies I could take with my Black Templars. Now they can! That means Penitent Engines are coming to town. ;)
Honestly, why do we want to take the Sisters of Battle? Because they are awesome and give us something we don't normally have...tons of flamers and melta. Not only that? They have tricks in the form of Acts of Faith.
So let's take a look at the HQ slot. For the primary detachment, we have High Marshal Helbrecht. We've beaten his benefits to a BT list many times over. Needless to say, his "DIE!" button is crucial for game-changing moments in a game. Something your opponent has to always be aware of. The second HQ is in the form of Saint Celestine. She compliments our CC-oriented squad by being a HUGE beast on her own, both via her stats and wargear. Or she can accompany her own units, granting her 12" leadership bubble for acts of faith. Due to her jump pack, she's able to operate alone if needed and can succeed due to the Hit and Run special rule. Celestine's own Act of Faith make sure somewhat "immortal" and granting you a second chance with her. Finally, her weapon doubles as a heavy flamer. Awesome.
Troops squads for the BT are pretty basic. We have a large blob-squad that is CC-oriented. They are mounted in a LRC to help transport and protect them. The other two squads are just basic tactical squads who will take advantage of any weak spots in your opponent's game plan. Then we have the Sisters of Battle. With two units of these ladies, we have some melta and heavy flamer action. Even better, their Act of Faith grants them the ability to gain Preferred Enemy for a phase. Which could be huge at a critical moment. Not to mention, the ladies have a 6+ invulnerable save.
The fast attack slot features the Sister of Battle Dominion squad. They are here for their ability to take lots of special weapons. This grants them huge versatility, without sacrificing anything in the squad. These will be huge in thinning the vehicle count or eliminating horde numbers. Very good squad for cheap.
Heavy Support has our much needed flyer in the form of a Stormraven. Its built for anti-tank. In addition, we have the hugely dangerous Penitent Engines. These guys are scary as hell. Not only are they packing 6 Heavy Flamers, they are also rocking 15 Str 10 close combat attacks on the charge. With as many threats as exist in the list already, do you spend the energy trying to kill them while they slaughter you? Unless they are chilling right in the middle of the board outside of cover...probably not right away. These guys can handle vehicles, MC's, infantry, elite infanty...really anything. And that is awesome. The list wins by giving your opponent a lot of threats to deal with, while maintaining high mobility. I believe the Sisters complement that goal perfectly. :)
