Update to the 40k-Metrics for my Nova List! :)

Hey there.  Seems like the 40k-Metrics by Nikephoros is catching on pretty fast.  I've seen a very large slew of people using it to grade their lists.  When I asked him to grade mine, I took it as it was and didn't check the numbers myself.  Well, I finally took the time to do it myself and this is what I came up with:

Laeroth            DMS        DMCC        DRPG        DLRPG          Notes

EC                     0.11        2.22         0.00          0.00             Abhor
5 Terminators    3.33        6.25         8.90          2.23             CML Tank Hunters
5 Terminators    3.33        6.25         8.90          2.23             CML Tank Hunters
5 Crusaders       2.33        0.83         4.45          0.56             Las/Plas, Bolters
5 Crusaders       2.33        0.83         4.45          0.56             Las/Plas, Bolters
5 Crusaders       2.33        0.83         4.45          0.56             Las/Plas, Bolters
5 Crusaders       2.33        0.83         4.45          0.56             Las/Plas, Bolters
Razor                0.74        0.00         2.97          0.74             TLLC
Razor                0.74        0.00         2.97          0.74             TLLC
Razor                0.74        0.00         2.97          0.74             TLLC
Razor                0.74        0.00         2.97          0.74             TLLC
Predator            1.48        0.00         6.67          1.11             Auto/Las

Predator            1.48        0.00         6.67          1.11             Auto/Las
Predator            1.48        0.00         6.67          1.11             Auto/Las
Typhoon            1.56        0.00         3.34          0.00             1 CML 1 HB
Typhoon            1.56        0.00         3.34          0.00             1 CML 1 HB
Typhoon            1.56        0.00         3.34          0.00             1 CML 1 HB
Totals:              29.65      18.04       77.47       12.99

So what are you seeing?  There are upgrades in the DMCC, DRPG, and DLRPG stats.  However, there was a slight downgrade to the DMS stat.  Please keep in mind that some of the discrepancies could have been due to how I rounded the numbers.  But it is clear when I was doing the calculations, that there was a little bit of error either on my part or his.  The rounding would not account for as much difference in the two sets of stats as there is.  So there is that.

Nevertheless, the two sets are fairly close in their numbers.  So that makes me happy.  I have a good chunk of DMS and DRPG, which is definitely what I'm looking for in my Nova Open list.  :)

Nikephoros mentioned once that he multiplies a little differently, ie. rather than multiplying by 2/3 he multiplies by .66 which could account for the discrepancy when measured over so many units.

You could do with a slight increase in DLRPG, just to be safer but it doesn't seem absolutely necessary (though it would probably be done by changing to Tri-Las Preds instead of Auto/Las ones).

Aye, I used the decimals. To be more accurate, I didn't round as soon as he did. For example, he multiplied by 0.66 but I rounded by 0.667. It wasn't until the final number that I rounded to the 2nd place. More accurate that way in my opinion. :)

I'm not sure where I'd gain the points to purchase the Tri-Las upgrades. To be completely honest, though, Land Raiders do not worry me in the least because it means they have very little fire support. And because of that, I'll likely be firing to near full effect for much of the game. Plus, I know how to marginalize their movement if I need to. Its the hordes that worry me. :(

Rounding errors, I had the same issue, but it is out in the hundredths and so far all we can see is that you need to have DRPG >60 and DM-X >40 to be "competitive".

I did notice that you did skip the capabilities of your Terminators in CC vs vehicles. Not how you are going to use them, but nice to know that they can step up and punch a Rhino or Land Raider down.

Also, IMO, the DLRPG is somewhat off. After all, IMO Land Raiders have a 50% chance of being "terminated", not the 33% chance normally (yes, 67% w/ AP1). After all, immobilizing it so what is inside has to walk to you is pretty much as good as a kill for me. I may have to shoot it again to finish it, but it then becomes a lot lower priority.

Why different for Rhinos? Because I've seen immobilized Rhinos with long enough range weapons become nice bunkers that had to be whacked, while it has always been what is in the LR that was the problem than the LR itself.

@Marshal Learoth

An additional possibility would be if he doesn't round at all, but rather simply cuts the number off at the one-hundreths; for example rather than using .67 he uses .66 and that would start to add up.

One possibility for the points would be to drop a Terminator Unit, upgrade your Predators, and get another Crusader Squad. Of course, that would solve the problem since you'd lose much of the extra firepower from the Terminators, you don't really need the extra scoring unit, and you'd be less effective against the very thing you are most concerned about (both from fewer small blasts and from the change of the Autocannons).

@Algesan

One problem about your thoughts on DLRPG is that the number counted is simply 'Penetrating Hits'. It is not absolutely accurate but it is consistent and that is all we need to measure our firepower. Also, it was pretty clear that Nikephoros only included the Close Combat ability against vehicles if you counted on them, so a Crusader Squad with a Powerfist wouldn't be included but some Meltabomb wielding Assault Marines meant for killing Land Raiders would be included.

Oh, definitely for now, leave the numbers the same, but although my Terminators don't go stomping around chasing vehicles to smash with their fists, I've used them often enough to assault a vehicle or squad that comes up.

I disagree on not including the Crusader with the PF, because it is all about "potential damage" which is why you include all weapons at best possible range.

So, as a shooting based list, the stats of
DMS: 29.393
DRPG(S): 71.474
DLRPG(S): 18.145

Doesn't look bad at all.

OTOH, it is comforting to note the following stats
DMCC: 48.169
DRPG(CC): 74.167
DLRPG(CC): 38.164

Which implies to me that the "something missing" I've been suspecting it true. I'm doing too much hanging back, waiting for the shooting to make the break I'm going to shatter the enemy with. I need to get more aggressive because my units, while perhaps not uberness, aren't slouches in CC.

Havent encountered this in metric form before.

Could someone give a tutorial for what those DMS DMCC DRPG DLRPG means?

Mathematics wasnt my strong point at school ^^

It is a system that Nikephoros, from Bringer of Victory, thought up in order to grade lists by their offensive output. Here's the link to the original post though he's made several others following it.

http://nike40k.blogspot.com/2011/06/40k-theory-its-all-about-numbers.html

It really is an ingenious system and one that I've come to use as standard for my lists to make sure they pass muster. It isn't overly complicated, just addition and multiplication, so as long as you have a calculator and someplace to record the numbers (excel spreadsheets work best for me) than it only takes some time.

@ Lucion

Just to give you a quick overview:

1) DMS -- Dead MEQ from Shooting per turn.
2) DMCC -- Dead MEQ from Close Combat per turn (assumes charges).
3) DRPG -- Dead Rhinos per game. Not necessarily "dead". Measures the amount of penetration rolls per game.
4) DLRPG -- Dead Land Raiders per game. Again, it doesn't measure how many you kill per se, but how many you're penetrating.
