Waaagh!Fest! in one week!

In one week, I'll be attending the Waagh!Fest! event in Granite City, MN.  Several big names will be there, so it'll be a great opportunity to get back into tournament play.  The list I am taking is certainly not your run of the mill Black Templars list, but there is a reason its BT's and not Raven Guard -- our Chapter Tactics and High Marshal Helbrecht.  On short notice, they changed their points limit to 2000, from 1850 points.  This gives me a few more options in the list and I took some time deciding what to go with.

Originally, I was considering some close combat support for the Helbrecht-led Centurians.  This could have come in the form of the Emperor's Champion, Culexus Assassin, or perhaps a servo-harness Techmarine.  Ultimately, I opted to forgo this plan because it would make an already huge target more of one.  Nor do I believe that I can really add much to the unit's CC deterrent with a single model.  Then I considered beefing up a couple of the Scout squads to include full sized squads and then combat squading them at the beginning of the game to grab home objectives.  However, this did not fit with the theme and strategy of the list:  extreme-mobility.  Eventually, my Land Speeder Storms will get shot down, but until they do...I don't want to footslog unless I have to.  If I can't get half-way across the board in a turn, its too slow.  Adding additional units to the list just seemed to cause the same problem, if they fit into the theme at all.

So what did I do then?  I very strongly considered fielding a Dreadnought that could be carried into battle by the Stormraven, but I opted to move some units around instead to better utilize a formation I was already using -- the Raptor Wing.  Because I did not want to drop the Land Speeder Typhoons from the list, and that I feel moving them to 18" to use their ability is extremely dangerous...I moved them to their own single-squadrons like they should be.  This makes them much more effective on the battlefield.  In exchange, I added two additional Land Speeders to the list with multi-meltas and heavy flamers (plus melta bombs for each Scout squad).  With two of these guys, I'll have a good duality tool box to play with that don't mind being within 18" of the enemy.  Having two also gives me some resiliency, without overspending on the unit that will likely die.  However, considering that this gives me a grand total of eleven Land Speeders in my list...their survival might be better than I thought.  I know how hard it is to take down that many Dark Eldar Raiders and these Land Speeders have quite a few tricks up their sleeves.  Ultimately, I only need them to survive long enough to target the most important unit my opponent has.  Anything extra is bonus cookies.  Here is the list:

~ Combined Arms Detactment ~

* High Marshal Helbrecht. [180]

TROOPS:

~ Raptor Wing ~

FAST ATTACK:

* Stormtalon Gunship w/ TL-Assault Cannon and Skyhammer Missile Launcher. [115]
* Land Speeder Squadron (2x Land Speeders) w/ 2 Multi-Meltas and 2 Heavy Flamers. [120]

Total Points: [2000]

With this list, I can avoid deathstar units easily.  I can neutralize a lot of shooty armies with blind (from the LS Storms), as well as deep strike armies.  Psyker-heavy lists are always a problem, but Adamantium Will should hold them off slightly.  I have enough close combat ability to get things done in a pinch, but my firepower is heavy.  The cerberus missile launchers put down a heavy stream of blast templates, with the Typhoons adding to the firepower.  My flyers bring in even better weaponry to deal with any target that is necessary.  Then I can clean up shop with the squad busting-Centurians.  With most players bringing some form of demons, deathstars, or MC-heavy lists...I think I'll do just fine.
