Laeroth,

I've never posted to your site or anything to that extent before, so allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Marshal Medved, and I am a new player to 40k and this genre of game in general.  One of my coworkers is, in my opinion, an excellent painter (proof: www.thatguyjames.net) and helped push me over the edge into picking up the hobby.  I ultimately decided that Templars were what I wanted to go for.  Something about their story just struck me as fun, so I decided to run with it.  Being a new player, I scanned the web looking for resources and ultimately ended at your site.  I've spent the last week reading through a lot of the material you have and it's been great fun.  You are a great writer and your material is approachable to a new player and from what I've seen in the comments, equally great for vetereans, so excellent work!

That said, I've been thinking about the most recent list from "Chew on this for awhile".  I think, to me, it seems like a great fun list to play.  But, as you mention on your blog, it can be taken as a starting point.  The questions I had about that list are pretty simple.  I would love to be able to drop pod in a ven dread with a flamer and a mm to cause some mayhem while the assault terminators are marching into battle.  My plan was to also ditch the terminator armor off the chap, and include three servitors in it's place.  My plan to make room for the dread was to drop one of the rhino squads, but this would still keep me over the point cap as a drop poded ven dred with those upgrades is still 175 points.  My question is, what do you think about the inclusion of a dread?  Would it be too unreliable in the pod?  Would cutting a squad reduce the value of msu?  How else would you go about freeing up space?

I should also mention, my intention is not to be ready for a tournament or anything like that.  I just want to field a fun list, which I could work into a tournament list over time.

I really appreciate the quality of the blog, and hope to hear from you soon!  I can't wait to start tearing up on the battlefield!

Thanks,
Marshal Medved

Hello good sir!  First off, thank you for the compliments.  I would be lying if I said I didn't like hearing them.  But that is besides the point.  ;)

Almost all of my lists are built with the intention that my readers can change them to their needs.  Even my hyper-optimized Nova Open gunline list can be changed up to taste.  The only one that I'd say can't be edited too much is the Defensive Drop Pod list, as it changes the style of the list.  But that doesn't mean its a bad change!

As for your suggested changes, I don't think they'd have a detrimental effect on the list overall.  Let's look at it.  The change to the Chaplain isn't really a big deal.  I prefer the Terminator for the ability to deep strike if needed.  Others like the Servitors.  Meh.  Doesn't change a whole lot in the scheme of things.  Adding a Venerable Dreadnought with MM/HF changes the list a little bit, however.  You'll also have one less Troops unit (to pay for the Dreadnought), which could be problematic when you're throwing them all mid-field (in the kill zone).  Being in the mid-field brings all of your opponent's guns/assault units into range, which could be potentially devastating for low troop counts.  But what you do gain is another disruption unit that your opponent has to worry about until it comes down.  It does the job of a MM bunker, except better.

If you believe the pros are more important than the cons (its pretty equal imo), then add the dread in.  However, I'd make a little change to him.  Instead of the MM, I'd keep him with his Assault Cannon.  With Tank-Hunters, its going to be "Str 7" and rending, so its not much of a down grade from the MM when targeting vehicles (only like 3% when targeting AV11).  However, it is much better at killing infantry.  So its a thought.

If you go with my suggestion, then drop one Crusader squad, the tank-hunters from the Terminators, and the searchlights from the Rhinos.  However, if you still want to go with the MM, you're only going to be able to afford two Servitors with your Chaplain.  There isn't really anything else you can drop.  :(

Anyway, I hope that everything goes well for you with the Black Templars.  Never hesitate to send an email my way if you so desire.  Good luck to you!  :D

Hey it's me!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond! It certainly helps consider some of the choices I have with such a list. I wonder if other readers might have some opinions they would like to add on the subject?

Go with the assault cannon over the multi melta. Tank hunting assault cannons are devastating against armor and offer duality by being able to help more against infantry. This is especially helpful as launching a volley with your dread before you charge is going to help immensly in the assault. Most marine armies are at minimum equipped with krak grenades, granted they will need a 6 to hit a fully functional dread in combat, it is still very likely going to happen if you charge a full 10 man squad. The assault cannon should kill 1 or 2 guys before you charge reducing the chances of your dreasd taking damage in the assault. Just keep that in mind, a multi melta seems good, but its one shot and if you miss, kiss ur dread goodbye.

Heh, going from DDP to Deep Striking doesn't change it that much. I just get the option of putting more on the board before I have to start dropping empty pods.

Now, we are not talking about my 'Ard Boyz list, that one has a few issues all its own, although in the end I could drop everything if I tweaked it.

I second (or is it third?) the choice of the Assault Cannon. Another difference is that the Multi-Melta becomes simply a S8 AP1 gun if you're farther than 12" whereas the Assault Cannon remains consistent.

I fourth the choice of an Assault cannon.

I would also recommend giving him magnetic options so you can switch from the Assault cannon and dreadnought powerfist option to a twin linked las cannon and missile launcher tank hunting variant - which is a worthwhile option.

Let me know if you need a tutorial on that - magnet sizes, drill size, tips and I'll get it on youtube.
